Named for a Paiute Indian chief who helped guide thousands of emigrants in their westward journey through 40-mile desert. Truckee is well known for its logging, ice manufacturing, the Emigrant Trail, as well as for the tragic expedition of the Donner Party.
Truckee was our first stop after we left my son's house in Oroville. A fascinating little town with lots of history. Besides checking out the historic sites we also walked around the beautiful lake.

This monument was built in honor of the Donner Party.
They were a group of American pioneers who migrated to California in a wagon train from the Midwest. Delayed by a series of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846–1847 snowbound by Donner Lake in Truckee. Looking at the monument the snow was as high as the top of the stone tower.
No wonder they had to shelter in place!!!!

beautiful Lake Donner carries the name of the pioneers
